Video Surveillance Systems and Toomer Oak Fire in Auburn

Security video in Auburn captured the act of a vandal setting fire to toilet paper hanging from one of the new oak trees gracing Toomer’s Corner.

The surveillance video footage will likely provide valuable evidence as the criminal prosecution moves forward in Auburn.

Although we are not the security technology provider here, this incident provides an excellent real world example from Alabama to demonstrate difference between high-definition (HD) commercial video surveillance systems and the traditional analog video captured by old-school CCTV systems.

IP Video and Toomer's Oak Fire

Here’s the full security video as posted on YouTube by al.com. Below the video, we have four photos captured as screen grabs from the video. Following that section, we also provide examples of HD surveillance video footage and analog security video from other recent (unrelated) incidents to illustrate the difference in video quality.

Disclosure: Vulcan Security Systems is not the technology security provider in any of these examples. We share these images to illustrate and explain the value of high-resolution video security cameras and IP security technology.

Commercial Video Surveillance Security Systems

The first set of photos in this post are screen captures from the Toomer’s Corner live cams.

Below those four photos, you’ll see two screen shots from a Central Alabama Crimestoppers video of a carjacking in the Montgomery area, followed by a few screen shots from a Nebraska television news report (WOWT) explaining the difference between IP HD video and analog video security technology.

Surveillance Video Technology Explanation from WOWT News

WOWT News in Nebraska recently published an excellent news package explaining the difference between analog security video and high-definition IP video. We embed the entire news package here, as well.

HD IP Video Footage

HD Security Cameras provided high resolution images to allow police to develop ID alerts and arrest suspects in two Nebraska crimes. WOWT Nebraska TV news reporter researched the difference in video quality. Vulcan Security Systems in Birmingham Alabama provides commercial video security solutions to Alabama businesses.

Police were able to quickly arrest suspects in two different Nebraska crimes, thanks to high-definition IP video security footage. That prompted WOWT news to develope the story to explain the difference in security video quality and how quality matters in criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Toomer’s Corner

Most folks in Alabama know about Toomer’s Corner, the beloved oak trees, and the tradition of “rolling” the trees with toilet paper after an Auburn Tigers football victory. An earlier act of vandalism by a different perpetrator (poison) killed the original Toomer Oaks. Tree experts have said it’s too soon to tell whether the fire damage will kill the oak.
