Video Security for Distribution Center Inventory Control: Case Study

3

Success stories from our existing customers are the most gratifying parts of what we do at Vulcan Security Systems.

This post features a success story where one of our recently-installed surveillance systems paid for itself within six months AND helped the client with a customer service issue.

Video Security for Inventory Control

Not long ago we installed a German-made Mobotix IP video surveillance system in the office, warehouse and parking areas of a major distribution company in Birmingham, Alabama.

It’s our practice to do a site walk and analysis with our customer prior to installation to define the scope of the project. In this situation, the scope consisted of a general overview of the entire facility with an emphasis on inventory control, parking lot surveillance, and vehicle ingress and egress points.

Our customer wanted surveillance to provide a general overview of the loading dock areas and wanted more image detail for surveillance at the vehicle entrances and exists.

We recommended and installed 5 megapixel, ceiling-mounted hemispheric cameras in the warehouse areas to maximize coverage and tighter lenses at the vehicle entrances.

The Case of The Missing Shipment

About 6 months after installation, we were onsite doing our monthly systems check and the director of HR mentioned that they recently had an incident where an entire truckload of material was unaccounted for.

She said that when the missing order was discovered, they reviewed the time-stamped video recordings from the hemispheric cameras.

Time-Stamped Video Footage Saves the Day

The 360-degree lenses in the hemispheric cameras installed in the warehouse showed a disgruntled employee throwing away the pick sheet for the entire order that was supposed to be shipped to south Alabama. The employee was, of course, disciplined.

More importantly, the distributor was able to rectify the situation and get the correct materials on the next truck out to south Alabama to ensure that their customer received its orders in a timely fashion.

According to the HR director, the company owner said:

It looks like those new cameras just paid for themselves.

We are pleased to announce that this client is in the process of installing surveillance systems for six additional regional distribution centers.
