Video Surveillance: Protection for Children in Daycare

Video surveillance can be an effective tool to help authorities recover a missing or abducted child in the critical first 24 hours.

IP Security Cameras

A strategically-placed IP security camera at the entrance and exit of a daycare facility provides time-stamped video record of all children entering and leaving the premises.

More importantly, a high resolution video camera shows you exactly who the child was with when they left the building.

Family Abductions

It is not unusual for children to be taken from school by an upset guardian or family member.  According to the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children  (NISMART)  http://www.missingkids.org/en_US/documents/nismart2_familyabduction.pdf  this is known as a “Family Abduction. ”

In the case of a Family Abductions, recordings from a high quality video surveillance system can be used to identify which family member the child was with when he or she left the premises.  Once this is known it is much easier for authorities to resolve the situation.

The good news is that the vast majority of Family Abductions are resolved quickly and without incident.

Nonfamily Abductions

Occasionally, a stranger abducts a child from a daycare center.  According to (NISMART) this is considered a Non-family Abduction.  A Non-family Abduction from a day care, almost always is the result of a procedural break down.

High quality video surveillance can be particularly effective in helping resolve non-family abductions.  Daycare directors and police can quickly view video recordings to see exactly when the child was taken. The high quality video surveillance (100 pixels per foot) can be used to help authorities identify a stranger.

Once it is confirmed that a child was abducted by a stranger the case can immediately be processed as a missing child case.
